Common questions about Florida boat and watercraft insurance

Is boat insurance required in Florida?

The state doesn't require it, but lenders and most marinas do — and it's smart for any vessel worth more than about $1,000.

What affects my rate?

Vessel type and value, horsepower, your boating experience and safety courses, navigational area, storage location and your deductible.

Agreed value or actual cash value?

Agreed value pays your policy limit without depreciation and costs more. Actual cash value is cheaper but pays depreciated value at the time of loss.

Am I covered during hurricane season?

Most Florida marine policies include named storm haul out reimbursement but may have a separate named storm deductible. We'll review the specifics with you.

Does my homeowners policy cover my boat?

Only in a very limited way. Homeowners policies typically cover small, low-horsepower boats with minimal limits and no liability protection on the water. Anything larger, faster or financed needs a dedicated watercraft policy.

What is a navigational limit?

It defines where the policy covers you. Common Florida limits cover coastal and inland waters within a set distance offshore, with the Bahamas or the Caribbean available by endorsement. Operating outside those limits can void coverage for a loss.

Does boat insurance cover wreck removal and fuel spills?

Good marine policies include wreck removal and fuel spill liability, which are legally required cleanup obligations that can far exceed the value of the boat. Confirm both are included rather than assumed.

What is a named storm haul-out provision?

Many Florida marine policies reimburse part of the cost to haul, move or secure the vessel when a named storm is forecast. It usually requires that you act before the storm, so review the requirements at binding, not during a watch.
